"first-person games" =/= FPS

I don't think that's what he was talking about (making shooters) since he referenced HL2's first-person approach to storytelling. Would surprise me if he did.

@Bereaver: Try Sangria's link at #5.

Very odd. It looks like a depiction of a Disney-themed Hell.

I have a hard time taking Disney seriously enough to associate the word "gritty" with them.

Well, WoW and MMOs in general constantly demonstrate where your money is going in the form of regular tweaks, balances, patches, fixes, and updated content. Besides the occasional expansion, most content comes from updates which your monthly fees support.

I dunno what justifies Monster Hunter charging for online besides banking on its popularity. How is it any more robust than Demon's Souls or WKC?

I don't like paying subs for Japanese games. Besides FFXI, I've never played a Japanese game with subs model that had support anything short of abysmal. And even though FFXI is well supported, the customer service is awful compared to devs based over here in the West. They've a long way to go before I trust Japan to treat me well for the money I pay monthly.

Have you ever read the "news" from devs on Twitter? It's usually just a tease that real news will be announced to a proper outlet.

Anyway, I kinda feel like he just wanted to criticize N4G since he spent 5 of his 7 paragraphs doing just that. The twitter argument is really weak.

MMOs have chore-ish gameplay perfected. Most everything in an MMO feels like busy work to me.

In traditional RPGs I hate hack n slash dungeons. *hack hack hack, grab key item, hack hack hack* is goddamned boring and repetitive. At least give me some puzzles or scenarios...something.

Doesn't look like show piece, no, but could still be good. As long as it has good depth for an RPG, I won't mind so much.

I appreciate your contrasting view on the matter, but I've seen a side-by-side comparison as well. And the Zune HD was in poor form indeed when it came to browser speed. It wasn't competitive at all. I'd still like to personally demo one at some point.

Ads when you launch an app is imo intrusive, inopportune, and just plain silly. Who wants to deal with that? Also, free is never an excuse to make a bad decision. Maybe it will be justified down the line when they have a competitiv...

^^What he said. I believe XNA was updated a few weeks ago to support development for the Zune HD. I dunno if they've taken any steps for distribution...but it's a start I guess.

But what legitimately sucks imo:

1. The browser is clunky and slow. Based on IE. Big mistake.
2. MS shows you ads when you launch an app. ADS. Which I don't have to tell you is goddamned ridiculous.

But on the whole I don't think they did badly at all with it. I would like ...

Reading comprehension. The person who wrote this article grossly misunderstood that segment of the interview. Thompson is not giving Sony credit, and he's not bashing them.

"Q: You'll be aware that Sony has recently been focusing on the non-gaming aspects for its recent PlayStation 3 marketing - is this a response to that campaign, or something you've been working on prior to that?"

A: "In some ways I wish we were that agile [smiles]."

I remember that article. And it's still sad to see people actually think it's a "great" thing that a beta should be worth a dollar sum. Adding value is fine, but betas should NEVER factor into your purchase price because you cannot buy betas. By their very nature, you would only rent them.

And...it ain't such a great thing that you factor in MS overcharging on the Halo name to bump Firefight up to $15. You're basically proving everyone's point that MS did exactly that ...

Good stuff. I like that "last known position" thing. A lot better than guards somehow knowing where to search for you. I also like how the background story is presented. I wonder though, how they'll involve Fisher personally in the story-telling if there are no cutscenes and you always remain in control of him?

6005d ago 3 agree0 disagreeView comment

Well, I take back whatever bad things I said about MS's GoD. Neither seem to offer very competitive prices digitally. Hands tied, maybe?

6005d ago 3 agree1 disagreeView comment

Points about Cnet are moot. The article was not written by them.

That's why there's a Gizmodo logo and a link that says "This story originally appeared on Gizmodo."

Buttons might make for a more traditional experience, but it's kind of a rip to factor them into the price point. So I don't believe that's the issue at all.

But the inherent argument there, that the discrepancies exist because one product targets gamers and the other targets everyone but gamers might be worth a look.

6005d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

I'm not sure who sets the prices here, but I know that if Sony or MS wants us to believe in a digital future, they could try a lot harder. The cost of going all digital is pathetically high.

It's complicated. I expect long hours from JRPGs but I don't hold WRPGs to the same standard. I feel like you can and should get more out of a WRPG with multiple replays due to greater flexibility in the design, narrative, and play style. The JRPG is quite linear in most regards so it's better to tell the best story you got in one shot since there are usually fewer reasons to warrant a replay.

Oblivion and the TES games are really in a class of their own.

Called it a while ago.

I'm not 100% sure why they didn't just make one game with two protagonists. This sounds silly.
